THE LAST BOOK STORE! (All Ages)
99 of Los Angeles’ most powerful poets unite again in the glow our sold-out Occupy This! produced and hosted by Jesse Bliss and Josefina Lopez. This mass gathering of artists is produced by The Roots and Wings Project as a busking fund raiser for our upcoming program Guerrilla Camp: Art as a Weapon, a media literacy workshop for Skid Row teenagers including visual art, theatre, music and writing components.
On April 28th, ART AS A WEAPON will celebrate the transcendent power of art and the limitless possibility of the human spirit, dispelling stereotypes and advancing media literacy through the spoken word.

Cafe Vida - World Premiere!
by Lisa Loomer. Directed by Michael John Garces
APRIL 26 – MAY 20, 2011 - PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN
The Latino Theater Company presents this Cornerstone Theater Company production created in partnership with Homeboy Industries and Homegirl Cafe. Acclaimed playwright Lisa Loomer pens the first production in Cornerstone Theater Company’s Hunger Cycle with an original work, Café Vida. Chabela and Luz are rival homegirls ready to leave the life and begin anew at Café Vida—the only place in the city that gives young women and their troubled pasts a genuine second chance to start a new life free of violence. It’s here that these former enemies choose la vida over la muerte as they learn to compost, tend a garden, julienne an onion, and rock your lunch order with a smile and a heaping side of transformation.

A Filipino boy wants nothing more than to be accepted for who he is. Forget that he likes wearing girl’s clothes to school and breaks out to do impromptu Christina Aguilera songs. That’s nothing compared to the trouble he is headed for. A funny, heart-wrenching, sweet play about owning yourself.
